Cecil, the lion symbol of Zimbabwe cwho lived in Hwange National Park, was killed in early July. Now the culprit has a name. It is about Walter James Palmer, a dentist and hunter from Minnesota who has been visiting Zimbabwe in the past few weeks as a tourist.

The lion would have been lured out of the nature reserve - apparently thanks to a lure and with the complicity of another person - and then the hunter would have hit him with an arrow. Cecil he was a 13 year old lion and had become the emblem of Zimbabwe's nature reserves. The man he would have paid 50 thousand euros to accomplish this fatal "enterprise".

The hunter from Minneapolis seems to have had as an accomplice the owner of a farm in the Hwange area. Both will have to face theaccusation of illegal hunting. The announced la Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority e la Safari Operators Association

Cecil's death allegedly took place last July 1st and now a month later the story begins to clear up. The environmentalists of Zimbabwe they acted in anger at the killing of the lion both for the way he was killed and for the loss of an animal that had become accustomed to human contact. According to Jhonny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, it was one of the most beautiful animals in the nature reserve and had never bothered anyone.

Palmer said after the incident that he did not know that the lion was so important to Zimbabwe and that he had reached this location to make a hunting trip with a bow and arrow. Guides of him would have gotten all necessary permits for hunting and the trip would be legally organized. The hunter stressed to have relied on the expertise of local professional guides to ensure legal hunting.

However, it is evident that Cecil's killing took place outside the law given that the lion lived within a protected naturalistic area. Cecil would have been lured out of the park during the night using bait, it would have been hit with an arrow and subsequently beheaded and skinned.

A cruelty that this lion, considered really meek, certainly did not deserve. The authorities are still investigating and the reasons for this remain to be understood really senseless gesture, perhaps born as a moment of fun related to hunting. Professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst is also involved in the affair.
