As reported by the WWF, on the night of 22 August a man, the archaeologist Francesco Genchi, who was on the beach noticed strange movements. So he saw that dozens of newborn baby turtles were heading towards the sea. The spectacular images were released on the web within a few hours and are truly exciting.
What makes the sighting special is also the fact that turtles are usually not seen in the province of Brindisi, for which it is an absolute novelty. Their birth is also considered a small miracle: the eggs had remained hidden from the sight of bathers. No one had noticed their presence, not even the operators who took care of keeping the Apulian coast clean.
It is fortunate that they have not been damaged by umbrellas and the presence of man, especially in the summer months.
This was announced by Fabrizio Stagnani, head of the WWF Levante Adriatico and a volunteer at the WWF Molfetta Sea Turtle Recovery Center.
"It appears that about fifty turtles have already come out of the nest", he tells Ansa, defining "the incident worthy of attention, but worrying at the same time", because it seems "that no one has noticed the brood" and therefore the eggs are you have been "exposed to an infinite number of risks" throughout the incubation period.
