The Carabinieri of the Biodiversity Department of Castel di Sangro today arrested a man in the “Chiarano-Sparvera” Regional State Forest, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
The man was surprised in a protected area and Site of Community Interest and was reported and referred to the Judicial Authority
"For having exercised hunting activities in a prohibited and protected area at European level, as well as for having contributed to deteriorating habitats of interest to the European Union and having endangered the state of the ecosystem, biodiversity, flora and fauna of a area of the Natura 2000 Network of the European Union ".
In fact, the man is accused of having practiced illegal hunting activities in a protected area and damaging the habitat whose conservation is defined as "priority" by the Habitat Directive in which there are species strictly protected at European and national level such as theMarsican brown bear and Apennine wolf.
In particular, the area where the hunter was identified is exactly the one where the Marsican brown bear lives, a highly threatened species of which only a few dozen simlars remain.
The hunter now faces up to six years of arrest / imprisonment and up to € 100.000 in fines.
Unfortunately, the news comes almost as a joke, right on the day when hunters are allowed to get closer and closer due to the reduction of the contiguous area of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park desired by a resolution of the Lazio Region.

Today the Marsican bear has just 50-55 individuals and is included by the IUCN in the "critically endangered" category,
