In Canadian Québec, a polar bear was shot dead because it was too far from its habitat. The great white mammal had been spotted not too far from a small town, but it was preferred to kill it rather than transfer it to safety.

In the south-east of Québec, on the Canadian Gaspé peninsula, a polar bear was killed a few days ago by the provincial police of the Sûreté du Québec because it was too far from its habitat, having pushed itself almost 100 km from the glacial zones of the Arctic populating.

The predator had been located with drones near the village of Madeleine-Center, previously alerted to the presence of a polar bear, where he was reached by policemen who pierced the animal with gunshots.

The dangers for the population would have been too high, this is the position of the Canadian police who killed the white giant, causing the indignation of the whole country.

Regarding this sad story, the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs of Canada also intervened who, in a long post on social media, responded to the many messages received on the issue of the downed polar bear, explaining that, in this particular case, a transfer of the animal would not have been possible as it is very complex and risky.

The possibility of moving the polar bear was considered too dangerous, as it entailed risks for public safety and for the teams deployed, in particular if the doses to put the animal to sleep had not been adequately estimated.

    emphasizes the institution.

Opinions of experts on this are mixed. Some argue that other measures could have been taken, without having to resort to culling, as has already happened with other bears in other regions of the Arctic. For others, however, the whole operation itself was difficult to implement without careful planning. In addition to the doses of anesthesia to be administered to the predator, it is necessary to have the right cages to be able to transport the polar bear, whose weight is about 400 kg.

However, this is the first time that a polar bear has come this close to population centers, as so far there has never been such a close sighting in Québec. The specimen is still one endangered species which could disappear forever by the end of the century.

Many of those who claim that its killing was unmotivated, invite us to reflect on the reasons that prompted the polar bear to be there.

Perhaps we all know the answer a little because it is precisely climate change that has upset the ecosystem of the great predator and many other living species. With the melting of the Arctic ice, these mammals spend more and more time on land, forced to travel very long journeys in order to obtain food.
