It was kept as a pet in a chicken cage and fed exclusively condensed milk throughout its first year of life. Budi, a baby orangutan arrived at the International Animal Rescue Center in Ketapang, Indonesia, dying.

Sick and malnourished, too weak to move, eat, and even sit. His malformed limbs did not develop properly. His body swollen with fluids, due to lack of protein, and suffering from severe anemia. But today he is healing slowly.

It all started when a resident asked local authorities for help, revealing that she was willing to deliver a sick orangutan baby. The rescue car was set in motion and, after a journey of over 10 hours by sea and by road, Budi arrived safely at the center, even if in extremely critical conditions.

"Budi spent more than 10 months in a chicken cage, fed only condensed milk", he said Dr. Ayu Handayani -. From when he was captured when he was a puppy, until he was rescued never received solid food. Lthe owner said she was afraid to give him fruit and thought condensed milk would be enough. "

But obviously this was not the case and, inevitably, Budi today shows signs of severe malnutrition. He is monitored and observed around the clock by vets and begins to be able to sit for short periods of time. He has a long way to go towards recovery and it is still too early to know if he has sustained any permanent damage. But Budi is very strong and is fighting.
