What happens when you give a group of orangutans a GoPro camera? Peter Pratje of the Frankfurt Zoological Society reveals it to us, who is also curious to find out. For this he has given several cameras to a group of firsts of his orphan rescue program, giving us as gifts beautiful and funny scenes straight from the "jungle school".

Le playful young creatures they delighted in grimacing in front of the camera, swinging and climbing trees in the rainforest of Sumatra, Indonesia, even if at first they were rather wary. Only when the trainers treated these items as something incredibly exciting, they took courage and picked them up.

“There was a risk that they would tear them to pieces. However, when they tried, they couldn't break them ", says Dr. Pratje, recalling that, if on the one hand the video offers funny videos, on the other hand it wants above all to highlight the tragic situation of these orphans raised by human beings to acquire the skills they need to survive in the wild, before they are released into the forests of Bukit Tigapuluh National Park.

The fault, needless to say, is the growing demand for palm oil for the food industry, which led to disastrous clearing of Indonesian rainforests. Alone in Sumatra, around 80 percent of native forest has already been destroyed. The loss of natural habitat, along with illegal hunting, has left the Sumatran orangutan in danger of extinction. Some experts estimate it could become extinct in the wild in less than 25 years. Their grimaces, in addition to making us smile, should remind us of all this.
