Animal testing for cosmetics prohibited, the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) has confirmed the law of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The constitutionality of the ban was challenged in 2018 by the Brazilian Association of Cosmetics, Personal Hygiene and the Perfume Industry. Which fortunately failed to do so.

Now the goal is to enact a full federal ban on testing and trading animal-tested cosmetics in Brazil, which Humane Society International is actively working on. That to raise public awareness and encourage them to sign a petition in favor of the federal cosmetic test and sales ban in Brazil, launched the #SaveRalph campaign, supported by star Rodrigo Santoro. Thanks to it, more than 1,5 million Brazilians joined the battle.

To reiterate the importance of the Supreme Court's decision was Antoniana Ottoni, of Humane Society International, who stated:

“Yesterday's Supreme Court decision confirms that state bans on cosmetic animal testing are effectively constitutional. As this outdated and inhumane practice is banned across the country, it is time for the industry, lawmakers, and the federal government to unite to promote a meaningful federal law to ban cosmetic animal testing and the sale of cosmetics tested on. animals all over Brazil ".

Fortunately, the states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and the Federal District have already banned cosmetic testing on animals. And considering they are home to over 70% of the Brazilian national cosmetics industry, that's great news.

But what are the tests still carried out on animals in the cosmetic field? HSI explains that there are those for eye and skin irritation, for example, tested on rabbits. Then the tests for skin allergies that are tested on mice, those for toxic effects in general, administered to rats, and tests for specific toxic problems such as infertility, always tested on rats.
