Il Bracken Bat Cave is the largest bat colony in the world. Located near the city of San Antonio, Texas, it is the summer home of these little creatures that move here every year during the warmer months. A real exodus, which involves approx 20 million bats. From Mexico to Texas to give birth and raise puppies.

Every evening, from March to October, they fly out, drawing formations resembling a crescent in the sky, reaching a width of 30 meters. From their refuge, inside the cave Bracken Bat they come out slowly circling inside before peering out. But after about four hours, millions and millions of bats they move in the sky, spreading out in an area up to 96 km from the cave and at a height of 3 thousand meters.

Once in flight passing from 8 to 12 hours to feed the little ones hunting hundreds of tons of insects such as moths and parasites. Their arrival is not silent. Those lucky enough to admire this show have described the sound generated as the roar of rain at the end of a storm.

The bat cave is located on private land owned by the Bat Conservation International which owns 697 hectares of undeveloped land around it. Access to the cave is limited in order to protect the habitat of the resident bats, but evening visits to the cave are granted together with the guides, to admire the animals coming out of their shelter.
