Bird flu: 6 million chickens culled in Japan as India closes largest poultry market

Since November, nearly 6 million chickens have been killed on farms in Japan due to bird flu

Avian flu continues to spread all over the world, leading to a real massacre of birds that are slaughtered en masse on farms as soon as the presence of the disease is discovered. Japan records a real record: 5,8 million chickens are already culled and it will soon exceed 6 million!

Since last November, a highly pathogenic strain of the avian influenza virus (fortunately not dangerous to humans) has been detected in 36 poultry farms in 15 prefectures of Japan.

This led to a slaughter of chickens very similar to the one that occurred during the 2005-2006 avian flu epidemic when 5,78 million infected chickens were culled in the prefectures of Ibaraki and Saitama.

According to reports from broadcaster NHK, this time the number is expected to be higher and will reach around 6 million when the current killing is completed.

The investigations carried out in the farms, among other things, also highlighted cases where the guidelines were not respected. Some companies had not performed proper disinfection and some had openings in their facilities that allowed entry of wild animals.

Other countries are also facing a real emergency related to avian flu. Among these there is India where the disease has affected several thousand birds across the country (9 states are currently affected).

Ghazipur market, the largest wholesale poultry market, closed in Delhi, after hundreds of birds (mostly crows) were found dead, zoos, parks with lakes, nature reserves and some farms were also closed.

Thousands of birds have already been culled across India.

Unfortunately, Europe is also affected by the problem. We told you about it in the following articles:

    • Bird flu, EFSA raises the alarm across Europe. Millions and millions of chickens are about to be culled
    • Bird flu: in France 45 departments are declared "high risk"
    • Avian: 190 chickens killed in two farms in the Netherlands
    • Bird flu: new outbreaks in Europe. Thousands of chickens and turkeys killed
    • Bird flu is frightening and dozens of swans are culled in England due to an outbreak
    • The avian flu has arrived in Veneto. Wild birds are also positive for the virus, but the hunt does not stop
