The animal welfare and environmental associations that had formed a civil party are rejoicing, for them the judge has established compensation and the settlement of all legal costs. It was the activists who had asked that the veterinarian who had carried out the autopsy on the animal and a ballistics expert be heard.

Good news because in the first instance, the man had been acquitted, but now in L'Aquila, la Court of Appeal overturns the sentence and recognizes the illegality committed by the accused, condemning him to compensate the PNAM and the civil parties, in addition to the payment of all legal costs.

“Are the penalties too light? Certainly, but it is the first step to make this country a little more civilized and to remind everyone that the law must be respected. The role of associations is once again decisive for having requested the appeal of the sentence issued in the first instance ", write the activists of Save the Bear.

The damage caused by wildlife is always compensated by the administrations, so there is no justification for those who decide to take up a rifle by killing an animal that was simply looking for food. "The provisions of the Court should be a warning to anyone who does not respect the laws for the protection of animals. There are effective systems to prevent any predations by bears, those who do not put them into practice cannot be legitimized to use a rifle against an animal that has no responsibility ”, comments Massimo Vitturi, head of LAV Wild Animals Area.

The accused will have to compensate the National Park of Abruzzo and Molise and the civil parties associations (Lav-Lega anti Viviszione non-profit organization, Regional Organization pro natura Abruzzo, Wwf, Salviamo l'orso), in addition to the payment of all the court costs of the first and second degree. The amount of the compensation will be established separately.
