A small step forward for the animal health and welfare in the field of scientific experimentation: the Ministry of Health has set up a working group with the aim of promote alternative methods to animal testing.

The Ministry of Health promotes alternative testing methods

The Ministry of Health has set up a table to study alternative methods to animal testing. This was announced by the Ministry itself through a press release.

Il working group it is made up of experts and researchers, as well as representatives of the institutions and has the objective of propose and promote methods other than animal testing for use in scientific research.

The experts of the working group will meet once a month and will present a semi-annual report to the minister.
As stated in the press release, the Minister of Health Giulia Grillo commented on the signing of the provision as follows:

“We have finally equipped ourselves with one tool of civilization. The monitoring of experiments on the use of animals is an ethical, but also a scientific achievement. It is necessary to balance the interests of research and science with the need to go beyond traditional methods to reduce the use of animals as much as possible ".

Alternative methods to animal testing

To design alternative methods to animal experimentationand it is often complicated due to the complexity of the human organism and the interaction between the various organs, tissues and systems of our body.

Several are available today complementary or alternative methods to animal testing. These methods can include the reconstruction of organs in the laboratory starting from cell cultures or the use of computer models.

At the moment i methods other than animal testing they are few and mainly concern cosmetic products: thanks to technological progress, the Draize test, which envisaged testing the acute toxicity of chemicals on the eye of live rabbits, has been abolished.

It was a terrible test, which caused immense suffering to the animal.
Today the skin and eye irritation of cosmetic ingredients are carried out on isolated post-mortem organs or on reconstructed organs.
