Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire, UK, warns that there may be a "mass culling" of animals as the facility is not part of the government emergency loan, issued by the government for the coronavirus pandemic. So, as always, animals pay the price.

The decision is directly announced by the CEO of the Twycross zoo, Sharon Redrobe OBE, who warns parliamentarians of a real crisis in the zoo without government funding. The facility opened on June 15, but with the restrictions of the pandemic, there are no visitors, so these poor animals experience an emergency in an emergency. Twycross Zoo was closed for 83 days, the longest period in its history, the facility has existed for 57 years. The managers had recently asked to be eligible for government funding.

“Like most companies, we had a chance to survive for 3 months. Without further funding, the best scenario is that we will suffer a slow and painful death, the worst is the most likely, that we will be short of cash by 2021 or even by the end of 2020 if we face another blockade. There will be no improvement in animal welfare in the next few years and we will slowly die. We need 11,5 million pounds to survive these scenarios ”, explains the CEO.

    And goes on:

“Not guaranteeing animal welfare and seeing the structures deteriorate, we all know that is another road to closure. The loss of a large collection of endangered species would be devastating and when I say loss, dare I say, potentially a mass culling as we are all in the same boat. No other zoo in the world has the funds to immediately create new enclosures as they cost millions. We are all facing the same ending ”.

A sad ending for animals, many of which were born in captivity and have become tourist attractions in spite of themselves. Already severely tested during the pandemic and now also in danger of being shot down because there is no money left. Usually, this zoo has half a million visitors a year. Its 80-acre site has around 500 animals of 125 species and all four types of great apes: gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos.

“We need short-term financing that won't usury us,” says Sharon Redrobe OBE. And we hope that the situation will be resolved before it is too late for these poor animals, already forced to suffer from lack of freedom, forms of detention that will never be able to satisfy ethological needs and exploitation for commercial purposes.
