The Caretta caretta turtle has returned to the sea rescued in the waters of Savona last April. The specimen, after being marked and micro-chipped so as to be able to distinguish it in the future, was released yesterday morning at 10.30 off the Meloria shoals, after a treatment period of about a month and a half at the Aquarium. of Livorno.
The animal, affectionately nicknamed "Scorza", had arrived in the structure from the Aquarium of Genoa by means of the Harbor Master's Office, after having been seen floating with the carapace overturned by a yachtsman. The diagnostic tests had immediately found pneumonia e the presence in the body of several plastic bags, that the turtle had ingested over time, mistaking them for jellyfish, part of the natural diet of these reptiles.
Fortunately, after about a week floating on the surface, the turtle had regularly resumed eating, also aided by anti-inflammatory therapy. The rehabilitation phase of pre-release observation, which lasted about 1 month and a half, took place in a special tank, where the staff constantly health status and swimming behavior monitored. The animal ate mainly blue fish, squid and shrimp.
The release took place thanks to the logistical support of the Port Authority of Livorno, which made available to the staff two boats reserved for the transport of the turtle, and in collaboration with the ARPAT of Livorno. Thanks to the collaboration of all Scorza it is now free to enjoy its sea again.
