In Finland a recent study by a team of researchers from the country and published in the journal Science analyzed the consequences of salmon aquaculture which are causing a rapid backward evolution of one of the most consumed fish in Scandinavia and the world. The experts examined more than 150.000 salmon samples caught since the 70s in the Teno River, one of the streams between Finland and Norway where salmon proliferate the most, observing how it occurred in these fish. a reduction in their size which led to younger specimens to spawn in a not fully mature stage.

In addition to early egg laying, Finnish experts have noted changes in Atlantic salmon DNA over the past 40 years. These would be due to a gene that determines the age and size of salmon reproduction and which would therefore be responsible for the rapid evolutionary changes of the species.

To understand how this is possible, it is necessary to evaluate several factors and, according to the researchers, among these there would be not only the intensive farming of salmon or the nets used for salmon fishing that catch ever smaller specimens, but also one of the fish that salmon are fond of. This is the Mallotus villosus more commonly known as capelin which is one of the main food sources with which aquaculture salmon are fed, but also a fish much appreciated in northern Europe, whose populations are decreasing as they are widely fished in those territories. An average of 18 million tons of fish such as capelins are caught each year.

According to the researchers, there is a parallel between the capelin fishery and that of salmon which, when added to the impact of human activities on the latter species, could be the cause of this counter-current evolution due to direct and indirect effects of fishing.
