In Thailand, a baby elephant was rescued after being trapped by a hunter's trap. The cub is injured.

An injured baby elephant was rescued after being trapped in a hunter's trap in Thailand

A two-month-old baby elephant was found by a group of rangers, stuck in a pond near a rubber plantation in Chanthaburi province, Thailand. The baby was tied with a rope to a boar trap, which injured his ankle; a thorny noose around his tail was also tearing his skin.

The team also found marks that looked like seven gunshots on the elephant's left foreleg, suggesting that a hunter had opened fire. The rangers cut the noose on the baby's leg and used ropes to hoist him. He was then transferred to a pickup truck and taken to a park ranger station where he received medical treatment from veterinarians.

National park officials are now monitoring the elephant - which they named Fah Rak - and are working with police to identify what caused the marks on the elephant's left front leg.

Rescue team member Virut Kadkeaw said:

We're not sure if the baby elephant's wound is infected or not. The vet is monitoring his condition. The police are investigating. The villagers have been ordered to stay away from the area as the elephant mother could be around and become violent if she becomes overprotective. '

Meanwhile, Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has urged the public not to use such traps, which can be deadly to wildlife in protected areas.

Thailand is estimated to have around 2.000 Asian elephants living in the wild, but conflicts often occur when they come into contact with humans on roads and in villages. A similar number of specimens, unfortunately, are held captive where they work in zoos and are hired out for religious holidays and weddings.
