Some newborn birds were walled up alive in their nest on the facade of a building and the mothers could no longer feed them. A terrible story that comes from Leipzig where it seems that such practices are unfortunately not isolated cases ...

Imagine a nest where a mother bird lays her eggs and gives birth to her young. All that remains now is to feed them but, at a certain point, returning home, the nest is suddenly closed. This is what happened to a starling specimen (Sturnus vulgaris) which found its chicks walled up alive in the nest where it had left them inside the facade of a building. And unfortunately it is not the only case ...

In Grünau district in Leipzig several bird nests are closed by construction companies who work to complete the facades of the buildings. The terrible thing is that the poor birds are not extracted first but, as reported by the Nabu (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), they are walled up alive without any scruple.

Fortunately, the sensitivity of the people living in the building made it possible to save some birds. In fact, it seems that the nests were deliberately walled up and even if the presence of the birds had been indicated to the workers, they did not want to hear reasons by continuing their work. The residents then informed Nabu that she contacted the police.

Thanks to the help of the fire brigade 8 nests have been reopened: 4 were empty, one was still under construction but the others were inhabited. Three birds were already dead, a quarter joined them shortly after. Some eggs have also been found which, probably, still have a chance to be saved.

These are not only starling nests but also other bird species such as sparrows and a green woodpecker has also been observed which attempted to reopen its nest with its beak and remained stuck. Imagine the desperation of these poor birds to find their nests closed! The Nabu filed a criminal complaint for this situation which violates the Federal Nature Conservation and Animal Protection Act.

The benefit of the doubt is still given to those responsible for this terrible act. As Karsten Peterlein, bird protection expert at the Leipzig Nature Conservation Union said:

“It could be that the perpetrators neglected the nesting sites and acted out of ignorance. However it is illegal in the breeding season and a cruelty to animals ".

Local police are investigating to ascertain responsibility.
