Two ships of Sea Shepherd, Farley Mowat and Sharpie, underwent a violent attack in the Upper Gulf of California while they were busy removing a gillnet placed illegally in a protected area hosting the Vaquita Sanctuary, rare endangered species of porpoise.

According to Sea Shepherd's reconstruction, several fishing vessels known locally as pangas approached the Farley Mowat by throwing Molotov cocktails and other objects. The environmental organization's ship tried to maneuver to get away, but one of the pangas swerved and hit the Farlay Mowat violently, breaking it in two. The passengers, who ended up at sea, were rescued and recovered on board the Sharpie.

While medics continued to care for the wounded, two other attackers boarded the Sharpie, threatened the crew and the Mexican military on board and destroyed the camera used to document the assault.

Meanwhile, bullets and fuel arrived at the Sharpie from the other pangas, causing a fire on the ship and they did not stop attacking the boat even when it moved away. Some accomplices on the ground set fire to an organization truck. One of the fishermen involved in the attack later died in hospital.

Sea Shepherd is working with Mexican authorities to combat poaching. one of the main causes of decline in the porpoise population. Many specimens die precisely because they become trapped in the gillnets that the organization was trying to remove.

A very important work that has allowed to remove more than a thousand nets that are threatening a species at risk of extinction. Work that obviously disturbs someone: that of the last few days is only the last of one series of increasingly violent attacks that the organization has undergone in the last month.
