Victory! Expedia will stop selling holidays that include captive whale and dolphin shows

Expedia changed its animal welfare policy and decided to stop selling holidays that include dolphin and cetacean shows

The well-known online travel company Expedia recently changed its animal welfare policy. It has finally decided to no longer offer its customers activities involving cetaceans in captivity, in short, stop selling sad dolphin shows, interacting with whales, etc.

In recent years, the growing awareness of travelers and the battles of animal welfare organizations have prompted more and more tourist agencies to abandon packages that offered, included among the holiday activities, shows of marine animals in captivity. Virgin Holidays announced back in 2019 that it would no longer sell tickets for this type of attraction or experience.

And TripAdvisor also made the same choice. Read also: Vittoria! TripAdvisor will no longer sell dolphinarium tickets and marine animal shows

Now it is added to them Expedia who on Twitter announced that he had modified animal welfare policy, eliminating from its sites the possibility of purchasing shows or interactions with dolphins and other cetaceans in captivity.

We recently adjusted our animal welfare policy. As a result, attractions and activities that involve performances by or interactions with dolphins and other cetaceans will no longer be available on our sites. Learn more: https://t.co/8MIDMkZGMT

It will take some time to make the change fully active, however the process will be completed quickly (by the beginning of 2022). However, it is clarified on the Expedia website that:

Marine sanctuaries that provide captive animals with permanent marine habitat are permitted if accredited and feature no interactions or spectacles.

Great satisfaction from organizations that have been working for years to achieve this result, such as Peta who stated:

PETA congratulates Expedia on officially turning down the cruel 'swim with dolphins' dates and SeaWorld prisons. PETA urges people to acknowledge and do their part by refusing to support such animal exploitation operations.

Wildlife charity World Animal Protection called it "breakthrough news" that will hopefully lead to industry-wide change. And it would really be time!
