Valentine's Day, the terrible Mexican love ritual that is about to kill thousands of hummingbirds

Love spell, amulet, witchcraft ... dead or alive, it doesn't matter, the clandestine trafficking of hummingbirds in the Latin American country is a terrible reality that is even advertised at the gates of February 14th.

For the Maya, the hummingbird occupied a privileged place among animals since it was considered a sacred creature and a messenger between gods and humans. Now in Mexico this bird, among the most important pollinators of the American continent, is under threat and is being captured to be used in terrifying love rituals, especially in these days with the approach of Valentine's Day.

The complaint originated from the Mexican Institute of Fauna, Flora and Social Sustainability AC which, through a post published on its Facebook page, warns about how hummingbirds are threatened to create "moorings" of love and other witchcraft rituals, especially in Mexico City.

The IMFFSS reports that these birds, dead or alive, are sold for between US $ 10 and US $ 15 and explains how this illegal trafficking is endangering some species of hummingbirds. Furthermore, it invites us to reflect on the fact that very often those who practice these rituals need to love themselves, therapy and take care of their mental health.

According to data from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, of the approximately 330 species of hummingbirds, 57 species are found in Mexico, and of these 18 are considered endangered. This bird, due to its role as a pollinator in the ecosystem, is of vital ecological importance, but people's ignorance is putting it in danger.

The use of the hummingbird for these rituals does not take place only in Mexico and there are several complaints about it. As early as April 2018, National Geographic had published the case of a woman in California who was selling amulets made with the hummingbird "to awaken the passion" and there are also many inquiries about these types of rituals in Colombia.

Using the word love associated with the slaughter of hummingbirds, a symbol of the joy of living, is cruel and despicable. What would the Maya think?
