Animals reduced in cramped and crumbling spaces, in unacceptable conditions. are panthers, leopards, lions, tigers and monkeys detained in the "zoo" of Guspini, in Cagliari), kidnapped for absence of regular licenses.

Two parallel blitzes in fact, in as many zoological structures on the Sardinian territory, they were carried out by the staff of the central CITES Service of the State Forestry Corps in collaboration with the CITES Operational Unit of Cagliari and the personnel of the Forestry Corps and environmental surveillance of the Sardinia region.

Zoos are both were found to be abusive because they were not licensed provided for by the relevant legislation, despite hosting numerous animals, including some belonging to species dangerous to public safety, and for some time allowing the public to enter.

In the first case, in the province of Medio Campidano, a real zoo, which had already been talked about a few days ago for the escape of a leopard, later recovered by the same owner and brought back to the cage, the entire structure and the animals housed were seized: 6 leopards, a tiger and 3 macaques. High administrative fines for a total of 33 thousand euros and investigations related to the correct application of the legislation on the possession of dangerous animals and CITES are still underway.

This is where the shocking images duffuse from LAV exclusively. They were taken during an investigation conducted in 2014 at the Odry Zoo facility, now seized yesterday by the Regional Forestry Corps with the CITES Service of the CFS, due to the lack of the necessary authorizations.

The conditions of detention are to be considered very serious and unacceptable: animals, belonging to exotic species in danger of extinction and considered dangerous, are forced into spaces that prevent them from expressing the minimum of primary ethological needs.

The second structure, in the heart of Barbagia in Nuoro, originally born as an ostrich farm, it looked like a farm, but with the singular presence of macaques and kangaroos, animals considered by law to be dangerous for public health and safety. They were seized the structure and 7 raccoons, two macaques, 4 capuchin cebi and a kangaroo. Except for the kangaroo, the other animals were also criminally seized as illegally detained in contrast to the legislation on dangerous animals. High 30 thousand euros of administrative fines.

LAV asks the Public Prosecutor of Cagliari and the Ministry of the Environment to arrange the transfer of animals to suitable places as soon as possible.

"It is unacceptable that animals are left in custody at the investigated facility, which does not have the necessary permits for their detention and which clearly cannot guarantee their well-being, even in the short term", states the LAV. “We also appeal to the President of the Sardinia Region, Francesco Pigliaru, to create a regional recovery center for exotic animals, which Sardinia currently lacks”, adds the Association.
