Loggerhead eggs hatch on the Lazio coast, but this is not good news: too much heat due to the climate crisis is causing the turtles to move further and further north

A record year for turtle sightings on the Lazio coasts: eight nests of caretta caretta turtles have been identified (last year there were six). In Ostia alone there are two nests, and each hosts more than 100 eggs. In Terracina (in the province of Latina), on the other hand, yesterday we witnessed the wonderful spectacle of the birth of 32 turtles: the volunteers of the environmental association TartaLazio contributed to the success of this event in safety, without consequences for the health of the little ones, such as testify this video.

Loggerhead turtles are among the animals at very high risk of extinction (classified as endangered on the IUCN red list) due to accidental capture with fishing nets, the exploitation of adults and eggs, the destruction of their habitat with the overbuilding of beaches, chemical and light noise pollution and finally global warming which, by altering temperatures, alters the sex of the unborn, causing a serious imbalance in the population, as this study demonstrates.

It is the first time that Terracina has hosted a nest of Caretta Caretta turtles - explain the volunteers of the Circolo Legambiente Terracina Pisco Montano. - This has meant a great deal of work by the entire network of Tartalazio volunteers, which must be thanked for the enormous commitment made in informing and training the beach managers and their staff and citizens who have been fully involved in this historic mobilization. for our coasts. It was then really exciting last night to witness the first hatching of nest 1 in Terracina at the Onda Marina plant, with the 32 small Caretta Carettas who took to the sea on a night of full moon and calm sea, lovingly assisted by experts, researchers and Tartalazio volunteers.

Legambiente Terracina has made available numerous volunteer 'guardians' (the tartawatchers) who have constantly assisted and monitored the two nests of the seaside resort, XNUMX hours a day, also thanks to the video surveillance system installed on the nests which allowed further remote control.

The first sea turtle nest on the Lazio coast had only been identified in 2016, and in the following years no more than one or two nests had ever been discovered per season.

The sighting of these days, however, is not good news: indeed it indicates a dramatic and dangerous rising temperatures, which causes turtles to make their nests further north, desperate for climatic conditions favorable to their survival and that of their young.
