Turbo came into care of the two weeks ago when a couple brought him wrapped in a towel. Their Chihuahua had given birth to a litter and Turbo was the only one with this particular genetic defect. They had visited several veterinarians, made no profit, and were beginning to lose hope.
But Amy Birk, head of the center, immediately set the record straight: euthanasia was not even to be considered, because the little one could have lived a happy life even with this disease ... all he needed was a trolley. And it had to be very light. After working with him to strengthen the hind legs, the staff started wondering what to come up with, as normal carts weren't suitable.
They knew they had to improvise. So they found and dismantled a Fisher Price helicopter on wheels and used pipes from a toy welding kit to do the rest. Now the Tirbo is getting used to the feel of the cart and can finally get up and use his paws for a few minutes a day, while continuing with physical therapy.
