Three little refectory babies were born on the beach of Marina di Vecchiano: it is a rare event

A rare event, on the beaches of the San Rossore Park, in Marina di Vecchiano, in the province of Pisa, three children of fratino were born

A rare event, such as has not happened for some time. On the beaches of the San Rossore Park, in Marina di Vecchiano, in the province of Pisa, three children of refectory were born.

In recent days, the managers of the splendid park located in the heart of Tuscany had reported the presence of two nests, in Marina di Vecchiano and Torre del Lago, rigorously protected thanks to the intervention of Professor Puglisi, the work of the Park Authority and the collaboration of the bathing establishments and of the Municipalities of Vecchiano and Viareggio. Inside the nest 3 fratini were born and it hadn't happened for some time. Six eggs were waiting to hatch and so it was, at least in Marina di Vecchiano.

"The birth of chicks of this species is now a rare event, it had not happened in our territory for two years, because it is a small and delicate bird threatened both by natural predators and by the involuntary trampling of those who frequent the beach: just think that if 30 years ago in Tuscany there were 70 couples, they are currently 15 ”, reads the official statement of the San Rossore Park.

The refectory is a small and delicate bird and as the Park managers explain, its presence is the sentinel of the environmental well-being of the coast. Unfortunately, this creature encounters increasing difficulties in carrying out the nesting: with its feathers it is able to camouflage itself to escape predators but this also leads to the involuntary destruction of the nests by those who frequent the beaches.

Three fratini were born on the beaches of the Park To protect them we need everyone's collaboration: let's stay away from nests ...

The San Rossore Park, a paradise of biodiversity

A splendid place, which combines the sea but also tree-lined areas. The Park is home to 30 kilometers of naturally evolving beaches, protected by dunes and shaded by tree-lined bands, where areas equipped for bathing alternate with typical nature reserves. Along the stretch of coast of the Park meet the mouths of the two most important Tuscan rivers, the Serchio and the Arno:

“An environment that hosts numerous rare plant and animal species, which confirm its natural quality and biodiversity. This is the case of the refectory, a bird at risk of extinction, which only here finds the right habitat to nest and reproduce ”, reads the Park website.

Now, the Park has set in motion to protect the little ones until they are old enough to fly on their own, while the Lipu volunteers will monitor the birds.

"We need the collaboration of all the beach goers: absolutely must not approach and it is necessary to keep dogs on a leash" is the appeal of the Park.

Welcome little ones!
