Thousands of cattle stuck in the sea for 2 months: hundreds already dead and no one knows the fate of the survivors

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Two ships loaded with cattle have been stranded at sea since last December and it is still unclear what their fate will be. Hundreds of animals have died, some of starvation, others as a result of disease, while the surviving cattle are living hell.

The two boats, the Karim Allah and Elbeik, had left Spain just before Christmas to export the animals to various countries, including Turkey and Libya. But, due to some outbreaks of bluetongue (disease affecting cattle and sheep) that has spread among other animals on board, ships have been rejected by several states. At the moment the Karim Allah, which left with a cargo of over 895 calves, is stationary in the Spanish port of Cartagena, while the Elbeik, which had 1.776 animals on board, is stranded in Turkish waters off the coast of Cyprus.

The cattle odyssey aboard the Karim Allah and the Elbeik

The animals on the two boats were due to undergo veterinary inspections last weekend in Cyprus and Sardinia, but neither wanted to approach the coast to proceed with the inspections.

Maria Boada Saña, veterinarian of the NGO Animal Welfare Foundation, explained that over a hundred animals on the Karim Allah ship have already died and, in light of the refusal of veterinary inspections and the shortage of food for animals, it is very likely that the number of dead cattle is much higher.

About two weeks ago the Animal Welfare Foundation appealed to the European Commission, asking to immediately stop the transport of livestock, which in many cases leads to tragedies like the ones we are witnessing.

Dutch MEP Anja Hazekamp said that "the only way to stop animal cruelty linked to the transport of animals" would be to introduce a total ban on the export of live animals outside the EU.

Eleonora Evi, MEP of the European Greens, member of the ANIT (Commission of inquiry for the protection of animals during transport) also spoke on the matter:

“For more than two months these animals have been forced into confined spaces and to travel in conditions that do not even remotely meet the minimum standards for the transport of animals. That is why I signed the letter addressed to Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides, so that immediate action can be taken. The fate of these cattle shows once again how the transport regulation, which requires competent authorities to grant authorizations only to hauliers who have contingency plans, remains unimplemented. The terrible conditions in which live animals are transported are unacceptable: lack of water and food, overcrowded spaces and extreme temperatures often cause severe injuries, or even death from asphyxiation. Not infrequently these are puppies not yet weaned.

Dramatic accidents that recur every year

Tragic incidents occur every year in which Fr.hundreds of animals perish their lives, transported by sea and in many cases destined for slaughter. A few months have passed since the tragic accident at sea, which took place in southwest Japan, which resulted in the death of dozens of people and around 6000 cows that were on board a ship to be exported to China. In 2019, a merchant ship with over 14 sheep on board capsized off the coast of Romania. But, despite these sad news stories that are so frequent, animals continue to be transported in unacceptable conditions, as if they were objects and not sentient beings.
