According to biologists from the University of Washington, sound and its reception are crucial for the reproduction, survival and maintenance of the population of many animals. In insects, low-frequency vibrations facilitate sexual interactions, while noise interrupts the perception of signals from fellow humans and guests.
Scientists already knew that mosquitoes, male and female, have to struggle to harmonize their flight tones, but the behavioral impacts of music on their behavior were not well known.
To try to fill this gap, the new study examined the effects of electronic music and specifically Skrillexm's Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites on foraging, host attack and sexual activities of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for dengue fever, a viral disease that in severe cases can even lead to death.
For the experiment, the researchers created a "music-on" and "music-off" environment in which they studied adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the presence and absence of music and came to some conclusions.
In the musical environment, they were less likely to feed on the host and were less likely to reproduce than the mosquitoes observed in the music-free environment. Furthermore, females exposed to music attacked hosts much later than their peers observed in the absence of music.
According to the scientists, in addition to providing information on the hearing sensitivity of Ae. Aegypti and their vulnerability in the presence of electronic music,
"The observation that such music can delay host attack, reduce blood feeding and interrupt mating, offers new avenues for development of personal protection and control measures based on music against the diseases transmitted by Aedes ”.
In fact, mosquitoes hate the vibrations produced by music and in particular by Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, feeling uncomfortable.
