This lioness is called Falestine and has always lived in the Rafah Zoo in the southern Gaza Strip. She was born in captivity and has never known freedom, she has always been locked in a cage. But not only that, at just 14 months she was deprived of her claws, a painful and useless practice. And the motivation for such a senseless gesture would lie in the fact that the lioness was trained to play with children.

The images of the lioness without claws aroused the indignation of animal rights activists. Falestine is treated as if it were a pet to be cuddled. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened and we have been documenting the horror of zoos for years. Yet there are people who continue to feed this business behind which unease, suffering and mistreatment are hidden.

The removal of the claws can make the lioness lame, it can lead to arthritis and other long-term complications, ”they explain from the Paw Project which deals with animal welfare.

But the owner of the zoo Mohammed Jumaa, 53 years old and the vet Fayyaz al-Haddad who carried out the removal of the claws, remained indifferent to the criticisms of animal rights activists.

“I just tried to reduce the lioness' aggression so that she can be friendly to visitors. We want to bring smiles and happiness to the children by increasing the number of visitors to the park, which has high expenses, ”Jumaa said.

Too bad, however, that once again, no one cares about animal welfare.
