The cruel practice of tooth extraction serves to avoid being bitten by wild animals destined for illegal trade

I Slow Loris, sweet big-eyed small primates, are thick victim of human cruelty. A very common practice is that of pull out their teeth to allow tourists to take selfies with them or to allow wealthy people to have specimens of this wild species in their garden.

Pull out wild animals' teeth for a selfie

I Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) are small primates which inhabit the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Indochina. Protagonist of the animated film Madagascar, the little primate has become famous among tourists, that enjoy taking selfies for a fee with specimens of this sweet-eyed animal.

Since the bite of the lory is poisonous, to allow tourists to take pictures with the lories without taking any risks, it is common practice to remove the teeth of these small animals. The cruel operation takes place without anesthesia and with absolute violence, it is very painful and can lead to severe infections and lead to death of the animal.

Furthermore, the specimens whose teeth have been removed can no longer be reintroduced into their habitat, as they would not be able to hunt and feed and therefore to survive. A few years ago, for example, the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand shared the heartbreaking story of Boris, a specimen of Lori recovered without teeth and with a broken wrist. The animal, after being exploited in the souvenir photo business it was abandoned in the wild, where, however, he would surely die.

The Lories are a risk of extinction and are included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species for the protection of biodiversity.

Unfortunately, that of pulling the teeth is a widespread habit also in reference to other species, such as dolphins, just as the claws are pulled out of the felines.

The suffering of animals for the profit and vanity of man

Il trafficking in exotic animals it is the third most profitable illegal trade after drugs and arms. In countries where poverty rates are high, having an exotic animal in your garden is a symbol of power and wealth.

In Indonesia, for example, politicians, military and businessmen build private zoological parks with wild and often protected species, although it is illegal. Whether it is protected species or not, remove animals from their habitat represents a very serious damage to the biodiversity of the natural environment.

Furthermore, the specimens are not domesticated, so they can be aggressive and bite and, in some cases, the bite can even be poisonous. Just as it happens to allow tourists to take pictures with wild animals, to prevent animals from hurting humans, vendors have a cruel habit of pull out their teeth .

La animal suffering that survive does not end with the extraction of the teeth. The specimens are forced to live in captivity and often they die from malnutrition. Most of the time, the owners do not even know which species the purchased animal belongs to and do not know its eating habits, thus giving the wrong food.

Other specimens die from stress given by living in captivity. These small primates are generally nocturnal animals, forced to be exposed during sunny hours for the vanity of their owners, who want to see and interact with them. Sometimes, after the purchase they are abandoned, now unable to live in nature. These small primates should remain in their natural habitat, away from the human cruelty that uses them for souvenir photos or for their own private zoological parks.
