    The island with its Komodo National Park is expected to be closed from January 2020 for a period of 12 months. The reason explains it Marius Jelamud, spokesman for the Ministry of the Environment of East Nusa Tenggara, or the theft of dragons.

    The decision was announced after yet another East Java police operation which in recent days released alarming data on the smuggling of Komodo dragons. During the last investigation, 41 dragons destined for the international black market. The dragons would have been sold for 51 million rupees, or almost 32 thousand euros each.

    "The criminals intended to ship the animals to three Southeast Asian countries via Singapore," said Akhmad Yusep Gunawan, head of the East Java Police Special Crimes Unit.

    With this temporary closure, authorities hope to stem thefts and implement a conservation program, increasing the local dragon population.
