Fin whales of the humpback species, much to the amazement of scientists, are showing a selfless behavior. In the waters where they are present in the world they are saving the other animals from the sea killer whales.

Humans aren't the only creatures concerned with animal welfare. Scientists are beginning to recognize common behavior in humpback whales. This behavior seems like a personal effort in the protecting and saving animals that are hunted by killer whales.

Robert Pitman, an expert in marine ecology, witnessed the rescuing a seal from an orca attack by a humpback whale. To protect the seal, the humpback whale has positioned itself to keep it out of the water to save it from the orca. So the seal was able to reach an ice floe and get to safety.

A similar episode was filmed by the BBC. Here humpback whales try to hinder the hunt of the killer whales:

Evidence of the behavior of humpback whales is truly numerous and ranges from the North Pacific to Antarctica. In 89% of the events recorded, humpback whales seemed to intervene only when the killer whales were already engaged in hunting or about to start it. Animals that humpback whales rescued from killer whales include California sea lions, mola mola (sunfish), seals and gray whales.

Now scientists are wondering why humpback whales risk their lives to save animals of other species.

Such selfless and emotionally grounded behavior, according to animal experts, has precedents only among primates.

Humpback whales often act in pairs during rescues.

Now scientists will have to delve into the subject and perhaps sooner or later we will have an answer to this mysterious and fascinating behavior.
