Mustangs, the iconic US wild horses, should be let loose, yet they are exposed to constant threats

Agile, fast and majestic: they are the mustang, the fascinating wild horses that live free in the United States prairies. Or rather they should live free. These iconic animals (which inspired the successful animated film "Spirit-Wild Horse") are, in fact, increasingly exposed to threats. Even if they should be protected, it happens too often that they are caught and then sold or even slaughtered.

The well-known Texan singer-songwriter and guitarist denounced this terrible situation Willie Nelson, always a great lover of horses. About 700 live on his XNUMX-acre ranch in Austin, Texas, and most of them have been saved from slaughter. “My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world,” Nelson commented in an interview a couple of years ago. “They are hand-fed twice a day and were destined to become slaughter fodder. Today they are happy horses ”.

Willie Nelson has always fought for the protection of these wonderful animals and just a few days ago he published a long letter in which he addresses the US authorities but also citizens, asking them to do their part to protect them.

Willie Nelson's appeal

Fifty years ago, Congress unanimously voted in favor of the protection of wild horses and wild asses through a law called the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. mandate that forces horses and other wild animals to share the protected territory with private pastures, energy projects and public recreation areas. It has created conflicts between the Bureau of Land Management, breeders, energy operators and wild horse advocates, and it has created a situation where wild horses are in the minority. Since then, the Bureau of Land Management has ruled that an arbitrary number of wild horses it thinks should remain on our public land and also uses taxpayer-funded helicopters to round up herds when they are considered too many.

Wild horses, like other wild animals, should have been wild and free, but they are adopted or sold, and many thousands more end up living in overcrowded recent or private pastures. Others end up being massacred and destined for human consumption abroad.
Wild horses need us humans to propose solutions that ensure their safety. Congress has set aside money for this, but the Bureau of Land Management will need to make changes and improve fertility control. So far they are failing to live up to this new direction. We need to talk about it. Without pressure from the Bureau of Land Management, these historic symbols of American freedom will disappear.

At the end of the letter Willie Nelson invites all American citizens to contact the authorities through the Capitol switchboard number to urge them to protect wild horses.

“Those who govern us must know that this is a priority for the American people. Let's overcome our divisions by uniting for this common purpose ”concludes Nelson, urging his fans (and others) to sign the petition launched by the NGO Return to Freedom.
