During a walk, Evan found himself reluctantly admiring this touching moment, in which the kangaroo male he held the female in his paws, both covered by the shade of a mango tree.
From the photos it seems that the kangaroo wants to lift the female in front of the eyes of the child, almost as if it were an attempt to revive her.
However, even if the images may appear truly touching, ethologists believe it is quite possible that they are the male has killed his partner in an attempt to mate.
An explanation that certainly goes badly with what human eyes would like to "read" in the photos, but which appears far more plausible. The male, who appears to be lovingly cradling the other kangaroo's head, was actually in a state of sexual arousal.
"The photos of the kangaroos are beautiful, but I think they have been fundamentally misinterpreted" he said dr. Mark Eldridge, head of the mammal area of the Australian Museum. “The male is clearly very stressed and agitated, his forearms are very wet from his own licking to cause some sort of cooling. He is also sexually aroused ”.
Eldridge explains that in fact, it is possible that the kangaroo tried to lift the female to be able to mate with her. An interpretation far removed from that of the last hug to the deceased beloved.
The photographer who observed the scene live is not of the same opinion:
“I saw the male take the female to figure out what was wrong with her,” Switzer said. "It was a very special thing, she was grieving the loss of her partner."
