The turtle found in the Strait of Messina with plastic in its stomach is saved

It was renamed with the name of Nazarene, the male specimen of sea turtle Caretta caretta that the Sea Turtle Recovery Center of Brancaleone saved from certain death due to the presence of plastic in the stomach and a torn-bruised wound on the carapace.

Let's go back to talking about them, the volunteers of the Sea Turtle Recovery Center of Brancaleone directed by Filippo Armonio who this time together with the Messina Harbor Master's Office rescued a large male specimen of Caretta caretta sea turtle, weighing over 90 kg. and an overall length of approximately 1,5 meters.

Nazzareno, named in honor of the Commander of the Port Authority of Messina, Nazzareno Laganà, was found adrift in the waters off Torre Faro, in the Strait of Messina and showed obvious difficulties in diving.

“There was a chase of about half an hour before we were sure the carapace needed help. And he certainly did ”, says the boat owner of the Coast Guard.

"Despite the truly considerable size and the difficulties in managing the recovery of such a large and wild specimen, the staff of the Harbor Master's Office did not hesitate for a moment to apply the entire protocol for securing the animal while awaiting our arrival, and this for us it is very important, because it allows us to minimize sources of stress and facilitate treatment for an animal that is already in critical condition "he says Tania The Great, of CRTM Brancaleone.

The turtle is now safe, has undergone the first tests and therapy is already underway to treat the wound on the carapace. What is once again puzzling is that Nazzareno is yet another victim of plastic in the sea, diving problems are certainly due to the presence of plastic in his stomach.

“In these days it will be subjected to further in-depth diagnostic investigations thanks to the precious collaboration of Antonio Di Bello, veterinarian and university professor highly specialized in the care of these marine animals”, explain from the CRTM.

Unfortunately, turtles, as well as other marine animals, are increasingly at risk, especially because according to the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, by 2050 the oceans will welcome more plastic than fish. What might seem a catastrophic vision in reality unfortunately is not, because every day we document situations similar to that of Nazzareno.

“It is a very rare event in our area to spot an adult male of this size. Too bad that the initial emotion gives way, soon after, to the anguish for what most of these animals have to suffer due to human activities such as fishing and pollution. We are increasingly convinced that raising the awareness of future generations is the only way to save our sea ”, he concludes Filippo Armonio, responsible for CRTM Brancaleone.
