In Crete, there is a man who sold everything he had to cure the strays of the island, creating a model refuge where every animal in need is welcomed with love. No dog cages for him, just play areas where everyone lives happily, waiting to be adopted
Near Ierapetra, on the splendid Greek island of Crete, there is an immense refuge where dogs, cats, but also goats live happily among the olive trees, the love and care that a special man dedicates to them day and night. His name is Takis and his is a story that will make you move.
Before approaching the animals, Takis owned a nightclub on the island, a nice motorbike and led a rather comfortable life until one day he saw abandoned and undernourished puppies in a landfill desperately looking for food. So Takis began to go to the place every day to feed them and from one, two, three, the dogs he looked after became many more.
Annoyed by the animals, some residents began to complain and threaten to make the dogs disappear, who, hiding in the rubbish, happily awaited Takis' arrival. After the umpteenth complaint, Takis has thus decided to radically change his life, to sell his place and everything he owned to open a shelter, to secure the dogs and cats that he fed and help all the animals of Crete.
The beginning was not easy at all and the expenses so unsustainable that Takis even has left his home to sleep in a shipping container, where he kept the most vulnerable animals warm. Someone then told the story of him around and many people around the world began to follow his work and support him with donations and adoptions.
With the support of the web and with his special way of getting in tune with any suffering animal, Takis has saved hundreds of dogs chained, mutilated, terrified by the man who without him would surely have died and has given them a second splendid life.
In his shelter, in the hills of Crete, there are more than 400 dogs running free and playing, relaxing in the sun. There are no cages, just huge common spaces, where dogs are placed based on compatibility, while the older or the sickest rest with Takis in his room. The cats, on the other hand, are located in another wing of the structure.

There are not even numbers, but many sweet guests, each with its own name and unique history behind it.
For example, there is Caroline, an abandoned pregnant dog who gave birth in Takis's arms, as well as Helios, the newcomer who, skinny and probably run over, wandered through the streets of Crete and that someone, pity to see him like this, took and carried by Takis. Now happily socialize with his new friends.

Among these there was also Black who has become a bit of the symbol of the shelter being a "super dog" with an immense will to live. Black was a dog paralyzed in the hind legs and with a tumor on the face that had been abandoned in the middle of winter at sea, deliberately left to die ashore in the freezing water, but fortunately rescued by Takis.
While everyone advised him to have the animal killed, Takis chose to let him live, or rather revive, and until the end of his days, thanks to his determination and courage, Black was able to discover the meaning of the word "love" .

All the animals Takis deals with are looking for a family, but unlike some associations, Takis doesn't send his cats and dogs anywhere. They are the future adopters who, if interested, must come in person to meet them, spend time with them and only after Takis has seen and met them, decide if it is appropriate to have them sent up for adoption.
Like Black, Caroline or Helios, in Takis' shelter there are tons of wagging tails with a difficult past, but longing for a welcoming home.
