The sixth mass extinction has already begun: this is what is happening

The list of animals that are slowly disappearing is growing more and more. Since 1900 the number has even halved, giving way to the 'sixth mass extinction'.

Giraffes, elephants, orangutans, rhinos and many others. The list of animals that are slowly disappearing is growing more and more. Since 1900 the number has even been halved starting the 'sixth mass extinction'.

La loss of biodiversity that there is going on is the most serious since the disappearance of the dinosaurs. This is established by a new study published in the journal of the American Academy of Sciences (PNAS), by biologists from Stanford University and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Researchers talk about the 'sixth mass extinction' which comes about 65 million years after the farewell to the dinosaurs, a more serious situation than expected because the number of some specimens present on Earth has already halved.

The numbers of the sixth extinction

Research analyzed 27.600 species among birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, obviously a representative sample of half of the species and the loss of population on 177 mammals between 1900 and 2015.

The data collected shows that beyond the 30% of the species of vertebrates is shrinking in number of individuals and geographic expansion. Mammals, in particular, have lost at least 30% of their geographical extent, while more than 40% of the species experienced a severe population decline.

A phenomenon that unfortunately, therefore, goes beyond the specimens that have disappeared in the world. Let's talk for example, of the bats of Christmas Island, in Australia, of the Catarina Cyprinodon (Megupsilon aporus), a species of freshwater fish or of the emperor penguin of Antarctica which is at risk of extinction.

Too many animals are at risk of extinction:

    • 10 ANIMALS AT RISK OF EXTINCTION THAT COULD DISAPPEAR IN 2016
    • 10 ANIMAL SPECIES AT RISK OF EXTINCTION
    • MASS EXTINCTION RISK FOR MARINE ANIMALS, FAULT OF INTENSIVE FISHING (VIDEO)

using the reduction of places in which these animals can be found as an indicator of a smaller number, scholars have come to the conclusion that "the population decline is extremely high, even in species considered to be at low risk".

The cheetah would suffer the most, the elephant, the African lion, the orangutan, the black rhino. A bleak scenario that does not bode well.
