The jaguar that, having left its natural habitat, was hit by a car in Mexico, was treated and brought back to freedom after 100 days of rehabilitation.

Covi, this is the name of the Mexican jaguar, was discovered in Chetumal in mid-June, with a wound to the shoulder blade and lacerations to the body, which, according to experts, came from a car accident. Rescued immediately, the feline was treated and spent 100 days in the clinic where he was treated under the supervision of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) of Latin America and the Caribbean, which worked with local authorities for the rehabilitation.

"We have established that he will no longer limp, that he can jump, move well and that he can hunt - this is essential when releasing an animal in the wild, especially a carnivorous animal," Joaquin La Torre, regional director of the IFAW, told Reuters.

At first gracefully and a little hesitantly, Covi ventured out of the wooden crate that had transported him to the heart of the sian Ka 'reserve in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo: the images of his release at the end of September, but spread for the first time in recent days by the Ifaw, they have been around the world.

It is in fact, as explained by the global non-profit organization, the “first rescue, rehabilitation and release of a jaguar injured in the wild in the Mexican region.

“He left without making a single noise, and in a wonderful way he began to integrate into the jungle, immediately camouflaged - commented La Torre -“ Hunts, feeds, survives and this is already a success ”.

Now Covi wears a satellite collar that allows experts, especially National Allience for jaguar Conservtion officials, to monitor his movements. The choice of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere as a place of liberation was dictated by the need to offer a safer place:

We decided that the best release area was the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve because the site offered the highest amount and abundance of prey and water. In addition, there is no risk of the jaguar being run over again, because the area is not equipped with roads and infrastructure

Go Covi, now you can get back to running!
