A magpie "riding" an eagle: it might almost look like a photomontage, but it's real and was shot by Nichole Wescombe
An epic shot, one of those that are made only once in a lifetime (if you are particularly lucky). The photo of a magpie "riding" an eagle might almost look like a photomontage, but it's true and was taken by passionate avian photographer Nichole Wescombe.
The lucky shot was immortalized in Avalon, just outside Melbourne, when a magpie, pursued by a tailed eagle, decided that the best thing to do was to defend itself.
Because there are no rules in the animal kingdom when you have to ensure the survival of your nest at all costs. Even if that means trying to drive away a huge bird of prey.
So okay, maybe the magpie isn't "doing a rodeo" on the eagle's tail feathers ... In fact, it's fighting for the life of its young.
In any case, it remains an extraordinary performance, which we can all enjoy thanks to these photographs.
