A humpback whale that accidentally ended up in a river full of crocodiles in Australia was able to safely return to the sea.

The whale, after swimming about 30km upstream, was spotted in the East Alligator River in Kakadu National Park a couple of weeks ago. Initially there were also two other humpback whales but in a short time they were able to return to the sea.

This is the first known case of humpback whales in this park's river on the north coast of Australia.

Many feared that the cetacean would get stuck in deep water or collide with a boat, so its movements were constantly monitored and the authorities had forbidden the boats to circulate in a specific area of the river so that the humpback whale could make its path to the ocean.

The presence of crocodiles, on the other hand, was less concerned, considering the large size of the cetacean, the only risk in this sense was to be considered in case it ended up stranded.

Fortunately the humpback whale, after 17 days spent in the river, she managed to find her way home during the weekend thanks to high tide.

To document the unusual event and the long-awaited happy ending, it was Park Australia on Facebook.

As reported by the park, the whale has returned to the sea and is in good health, so it was not at all affected by the stay in the river.

“We are so grateful to the owners of Kakadu, the national park staff and scientists from NT and across the country, who have worked together to manage this very unusual situation and have achieved a good result,” said Feach Moyle of Kakadu National Park.

It is not clear why this humpback whale took the direction of the river, it is thought that it was headed south towards Antarctica and that, by mistake, it entered an estuary that led it further upstream.
