If when we are in love we become red, in the animal world this color can change. Ask the The frog Arvale, a particular amphibian that during the mating season becomes blu.

Its original color is brown. On the surface, therefore, it may seem like a common frog, but when it comes time to mate it is Nature who dresses her up to attract the attention of the female. It is only the male that turns blue. There is an evident lack of dimorphism in this species as males and females appear virtually identical.

When these animals reach the ponds it becomes very difficult for them to distinguish between the sexes. And Nature has found the solution: males magically transform their bodies taking on a beautiful blue color. Thus it is even easier to be distinguished in the mass of frogs brown.

An adult male of Rana Arvale measures approx 7cm in length and usually its balls are reddish-brown. But every year, between March and June, the frog exhibits chameleonic tendencies. During this period, in fact, these small animals come out of their winter hibernation and are naturally in the mood to procreate. They populate the ponds in the plains of Central and Southern Europe, saturating the air with their calls, similar to muffled puffs of air.

How does thecoupling? Males move on the surface of ponds earlier than females. They only turn blue for a week and launch their calls for mating, awaiting the arrival of the partner. When the females finally decide to make an appearance, the males start moving around a lot, eager to find their potential mates. Once chosen, the male literally rushes towards the female.

Curiosity. In their haste, frogs often end up choosing the wrong partner!
