Events of this magnitude are rare, but have occurred again in Western Australia in the southern location of Bremer Bay where last week killer whales have preyed on and killed blue whales on a large scale and then eat it. The orca is one of the most feared predators ever that attacks sea lions, sharks and whales and it is no coincidence that it boasts the nickname of "killer".
This is the most striking predatory event ever to occur on the planet. The largest predator that takes down the largest prey
said marine ecologist Robert Pitman of the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute, commenting on the story that saw the gathering of more than 50 killer whales that have devoured the bodies of whales in a brutal way.
It is not the first time that researchers have observed such attacks. The first episode occurred in March 2019, followed by an attack in the following month and one in March 2021 when 12 orcas chased a whale for more than an hour and a half. All attacks were then the work of female killer whales.
However, what happened in recent days has nothing to do with the previous attacks since the whales hit were killed and mauled, but not only. What the scholars have noticed is that this pack was made up of females and males and it would have been the presence of the larger males to carry out the attack.
This would suggest a new behavior developed by killer whales that would heavily affect the populations of whales, species already very exposed to extinction risk.
