The polar storm that is bringing Texas to its knees has caused not only numerous accidents and inconvenience to millions of people, but also several deaths among the animals living in the country. Due to the continuous blackouts that are occurring these days, several specimens hosted by the Primarily Primates Animal Sanctuary have died of freezing. These include several monkeys, many tropical birds, some lemurs and a chimpanzee.

So in the last few days, the sanctuary, which houses 400 animals, mostly monkeys that need care after being the subject of scientific experiments, has been transformed into a large cemetery.

“I never, ever thought my office would turn into a morgue but it did,” admits Brooke Chavez, executive director of Primially Primates. In fact, the sanctuary has had no electricity for about 3 days.

The race against time to save the animals of the sanctuary

After the sudden power outage on Monday, Chavez and his team of 12 operators immediately intervened to try to save the 400 animals living in the facility. They started to collect generators, stoves and blankets to protect them from the cold, but despite their mobilization for some specimens, unfortunately there was nothing to do.

“Someone asked me how many animals died. I don't know yet ”- explains Chavez. - “I know we have lost many monkeys, lemurs and tropical birds” As clarified by the director of Primially Primates it will not be possible to make a precise balance of the deceased specimens until the storm has subsided. According to the weather forecast, however, temperatures should drop further in the coming days.

Fortunately, some of the animals were transferred to other nearby sanctuaries and structures, while others were welcomed into the homes of animal welfare volunteers. However, some specimens - including dozens of chimpanzees - cannot be easily transported elsewhere and are still found at the Primarily Primates Animal Sanctuary. For this reason, the managers of the sanctuary have launched an appeal on social networks to ask for donations to buy generators and save the monkeys:

*2/17 #UPDATE* We need generators! As we're going into day 3 with no electricity, we're looking for generators to help…

The record cold spell that has hit Texas in recent days has also taken other animals by surprise, including sea turtles not accustomed to such cold temperatures. Just in these days thousands of specimens have poured, stunned by the cold, on the Texan beaches of South Padre Island. Fortunately, a team of volunteers intervened to save them and brought them to safety inside a conference center waiting to be released when the water temperatures are less freezing.
