Human activities and the resulting climate crisis threaten biodiversity every day and cause the extinction of many animal and plant species every year.

Fortunately, there are those who seek to counter these irremediable losses working for the conservation of species.
This is the case, for example, of the Brazilian biologist Neiva Guedes, which has devoted 30 years of its life trying to protect various animal species in South America, most notably the blue macaw parrot.

The blue macaw parrot is a symbolic species of the Pantanal, a large humid region located between Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.

Until recently, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus was one of many endangered species, but thanks to Neiva's efforts and the efforts of the Arara Azu Institute she founded, this splendid parrot is finally out of danger. Currently, in fact, the Hyacinth Macaw, another name by which this parrot is known, has been classified by the IUCN as "vulnerable" and it is estimated that there are about 4 thousand adult specimens left. Unlike another blue macaw, the Spix macaw, which was officially declared extinct just two years ago

Neiva began his studies in biology almost by chance and, after graduation, he obtained a master's in zoology, which focused on the blue macaw. After the master, the work of the biologist concentrated in the Pantanal region and protect the blue macaw parrot it has become a life project.

The researcher thus dedicated 30 of her 57 years to trying to raise awareness in the community about the value of this species, showing people what she was studying, explaining to them the privilege of being able to live harmoniously with the macaws every day and encouraging the population to collaborate. to the protection and conservation of the blue macaw.

The parrot in fact was a risk of extinction mainly due to hunting illegal and the cooperation of the residents was essential to exclude the blue macaw from the lists of species at risk.

The biologist has in fact managed to to raise awareness of people about the importance of living in nature and how important it is to protect and conserve the environment we belong to.

Thanks to her work, the blue macaw parrot is safe and the biologist has been nominated for the Faz Diferença 2020 Award in the Science and Health category, an award promoted by the newspaper Globo, which recognizes the talent and dedication of Brazilians who through their commitment have inspired the country and the world in 2019.
