In Australia there is a very large Australia Zoo recovery center that covers more than 450.000 acres of land in Queensland it hosts and protects endangered species as well as injured animals undergoing rehabilitation. The zoo-hospital was created in 2004 by the naturalist and science popularizer Steve Irwin together with his wife Terri with the aim of protect Australian fauna according to Steve's motto "save one, save species - save a life save a species", while already in 2002 the couple had founded the charity Wildlife Warriors.

After Steve Irwin's death in 2006 while the naturalist was filming a documentary about the Great Barrier Reef until he was pierced by a stingray's venomous tail, the family carried out their vision, personally taking care of the management of the center and its guests. This was the will of Steve and his wife Terri and children Bindi and Robert never wanted to abandon their father's project, on the contrary they created new collaborations to remember Steve in this way.

To date, the Irwin family supports 16 initiatives for the protection of animal species. These include a 24-hour contactable rescue unit for wildlife recovery, as well as the conservation sponsor of the Sumatran tiger, Asian elephants and the Black Mambas team of rangers who are predominantly women in Africa to combat poaching.
