As many as 25 primates are at risk of extinction, including lemurs from Madagascar. This was revealed by the biennial report Primates In Peril, published by Global Wildlife Conservation.

Released in London in recent days on the occasion of the 50th anniversary conference of the Primate Society of Great Britain, the dossier revealed that 62% of the more than 700 known species and subspecies of monkeys, lemurs and other primates are currently facing serious threats to their survival. 42% are in danger or in serious danger.

There are now fewer than 800 Batang Toru orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) on Earth, as the newly discovered species is called. They all live in a degraded primary forest on the island of Sumatra divided in two by the roads.

The report lists the top 25 most endangered primate species, and although the list was compiled before the Batang Toru orangutan was discovered, the report's authors said they will almost certainly appear on the list at the next update. Its closest relative, the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), found only on the island of Borneo about 1.000 kilometers from Sumatra, makes its first appearance on the list.

"The orangutan of Borneo appears on this list for the first time due to the sharp decline in the population in the last 50 years " they explained the authors of the report. "There has been a dramatic decline in their numbers in recent decades and the forests they live in are now highly fragmented with very few areas capable of hosting 1.000 individuals or more."

The list includes six Madagascar lemurs, including James's lemur (Lepilemur jamesi), which was only discovered in 2006 but is already listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, because its population has been reduced to less than 2.000. individuals.

There are also five specimens at risk species African, including the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), which has experienced a severe decline since the 90s, due to illegal hunting. It is estimated that there are now fewer than 4.000 specimens on Earth. This means that the population has decreased by 77% in just one generation.

Eight more species Asian join the Bornean orangutan.
