Good news! The disastrous fire that struck the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on the evening of Monday April 15 did not endanger the miles of bees that live among spiers and gargoyles. An army of 200 bees all safe, a sign of their incredible strength!

The good news comes from Nicolas Géant, the beekeeper who takes care of the three beehives that are located on the sacristy adjacent to the cathedral.

The 200 bees in the hives of Our Lady of Paris therefore survived the fire that devastated the roof of the cathedral.

“Bees are alive - says Géant. At first I thought that the three hives were burned, I had no information. But then I was able to see through the satellite images that this was not the case and the spokesman for the cathedral confirmed that they entered and found the beehives ”.

Nicolas Géant received messages and calls from all over the world from people asking if bees had died in the flames.

“It was unexpected. I received calls from Europe, of course, but also from South Africa, Japan, the United States and South America, ”she says.

But how come the bees didn't die in fire, flames and water? In the event of a fire and at the first signs of smoke, the bees "stuff themselves" with honey and protect their queen. What is found in Notre Dame is a species (the European bee) that does not leave its hive, has no lungs, but CO2 practically simply makes it fall asleep.

As for those of the cathedral, each hive produces an average of 25 kilos of honey per year, sold to the staff of Notre Dame, who have protected them since 2013. And now Nicolas Géant hopes to get back to work immediately.
