The Natural History Museum of London has decided to make public some of the best images selected from the thousands of photographs received on the occasion of the "Veolia Environmental Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012" competition, dedicated to nature photography and focused on the protagonists of wildlife.
They participated in the competition 48 thousand photographs, which were skimmed by the jury to select the 100 best shots, which have been considered among the finalists and for this reason will be exhibited in a specially dedicated exhibition in the British museum. We therefore give you the opportunity to admire 10 of the most fascinating works that have reached the final stage of the award.
1) “Treading Water” – Charlie Hamilton James
The photographer was able to take this image, depicting a baby otter of only four months, while he was inside the “Manu National Park”in Perù, intent on shooting a documentary on giant otters. The puppy would have shown a certain curiosity towards the photographer, who had the readiness to catch an expression that appears to be one of true amazement.
2) “Sizing Up” – Klaus Tamm
The photographer was able to capture the two insects while they were in a particularly artistic and symmetrical position by glancing towards the window sill of the house where he was on vacation, near Etang-Sale-lesHauts, on the French island of Reunion Island. Tamm was quick to photograph the two insects several times before they flew away.
3) “The Duel” – Sergey Gorshkov
The Russian photographer was able to photograph this white goose, visibly frightened while it is threatened by a predator (an arctic fox), during the migration of this species of birds. from North America to Russia, which occurs between spring and summer. The photograph was taken in May in the North of Russia.
4) “Fly-By Drinking” – Ofer Levy
Ofer Levy managed to accomplish the feat of enclosing a photographic shot of the moment of the encounter with the water of a Australian bat, belonging to a species considered in danger of extinction, due to climate change, the disappearance of the habitat and the hand of man, which often acts against bats considering them a threat.
5) “Relaxation” – Jasper Doest
During the winter, i macaques living in the Japanese valley of Jigokudani they gather in search of warmth in the places where there are sulfur springs and hot water basins, due to the volcanic activity of the area. The photographer was able to observe one of the macaques as he fell asleep relaxing in the water. The monkey must have put away complete trust in the human being, falling asleep in front of Jasper.
6) “Turtle Gem” - Jordi Chias Pujol
Armeñime, on the south coast of Tenerife, is considered a real paradise for sea turtles. The colors of their shells stand out on the golden sand and in the crystalline waters that host them. The turtle photographed, commonly called "green turtle", unfortunately belongs to an endangered species.
7) “The Tourist Tiger Trail” – Melissa Lee
This wonderful image was taken at "Tiger Temple", a Buddhist monastery located in the city of Kanchanaburi, in Thailand. The temple, whose full name is “Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua Yannasampanno”, began hosting injured tigers and tiger cubs in 1999, providing them with the necessary help and attracting more and more pilgrims and simply curious.
8) “The Glance” – Jami Tarris
The image was taken inside the forest of an Indonesian island, after days of observing the habits of the gods black macaques. When the photographer dared to approach the trio represented to take his shot, one of the macaques literally struck him with his gaze, as if he were trying to express the desire to defend their privacy.
9) “Evening Rays” – Claudio Gazzaroli
The Swiss photographer Claudio Gazzaroli was on the island of Grand Cayman when he was able to observe, under the amazing colors of the evening sky, a herd of over 70 specimens of parsnips. One of them has become the protagonist of the image present here, taken from an angle considered rather unusual.
10) Seized Opportunity – Gregoire Bouguereau
The photographer was able to observe the behavior of the gods during a short stay cheetahs in relation to hunting, at the Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania, where being able to survive often means being able to seize the right moment, which Gregoire Bouguereau did not let slip to be able to make this shot.
