More than a million signatures is what the campaign has collected to date #StopTheTrucks of Eurogroup for Animals which requests the updating of the rules on transport of live animals to guarantee dignified treatments to the many species forced to travel long distances in critical conditions.

As stated on the petition website, every year at least one billion chickens and 37 million other animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses are transported in and out of the EU.

A huge number of beings who are transported like others please all piled up even for long days without drinking, eating and resting. A terrible and cruel situation which exposes them to dehydration, injury, risk of epidemics and even death.

After the investigation, conducted for 5 years by Eyes on Animals, highlighted these chilling scenarios, it was decided to launch a petition at European level to save these animals so much suffering. It essentially asks for stop the long-distance transport of live animals reviewing the current regulations.

And the results were not left to wait: thanks to campagna #StopTheTrucks, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Belgium they asked the European Commission to review the rules on the transport of live animals. There are specific requirements that can guarantee the welfare of the animals, also limiting the duration of journeys based on individual species.

It is not the first time that investigations by animal welfare associations have revealed the sad realities linked to intensive farming and to the transport of animals in Europe but also in other countries. For example, we had already told you about the inspections carried out at the Turkish border in Kapikule by the Animal Welfare Foundation and Tierschutzbund Zürich. Also in that case, following the dramatic conditions documented, a petition was born.

Some last year instead animals (about 13 thousand) were got stuck even on a ship aground off Perth and some were dead. Unfortunately, all these situations were not enough to achieve something concrete in favor of animals but at least they served to open the eyes of many people, probably the same ones who also signed the most recent petition.
