Stop eating cats and dogs. A provocative advertising campaign launched by the Animals Asia group in the main cities of China, from Beijing to Shanghai, passing through Guangzhou, is asking Chinese citizens.
The images of the 279 ads posted in streets, elevators, subway stations, trains and buses, they are as talkative as the messages they carry. All billboards feature pets framed by chopsticks in various contexts. One of them features a little girl and two dogs with the inscription: “The one you just put in your mouth could be your baby's best friend during its growth ".
The posters are intended to inform the public about health risks of eating dog and cat meat. And to get people to reflect on the reasons why they eat animals that could be considered as friends, not as food (to be precise, this is a universal message, which in Western culture should also apply to pigs, cows and chickens).
“We know that, when informed, most people choose to do not eat dog and cat meat. There are health implications, not to mention that dogs and cats served as food were often stolen from a loving family ", Recalls Jill Robinson, the heroic founder of Animal Asia. And, we add, the unjustifiable absence of adequate laws for their protection and the terrible conditions on farms (recently documented by an Animal Equality investigation)
“The good news is that awareness is spreading. The reaction we had from the public to the posters was incredible, as was the willingness to share the message further. We are not wrong, animal welfare is now an increasingly important issue in China and also the dog and cat meat industry is now called to respond“, concludes Robinson.
