2000 euro reward for those who will provide useful information to identify the authors dell 'killing of the "Stefano" bear, the Marsican bear found dead last Sunday on the Molise side of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. To offer the sum is the Lega Antiviviszione (Lav), which asks for fast and effective investigations on the reason and the author of the death.

"We ask the competent Public Prosecutor's Office and the Police Forces, first of all the State Forestry Corps, that whoever has made this atrocious gesture be identified with fast and effective investigations, through stringent technical investigations, also with the involvement of the Institute of Veterinary Forensic Medicine of Grosseto, through the autopsy of the bear and the examination of the bullets ”says LAV.

THE GUILTY. The authors will have to answer for the crime of killing an animal with cruelty pursuant to art 544 bis Criminal Code. ”In addition to this, they will also have to answer for the crime of hunting theft referred to in Articles 624, 625 n. 7, of the Criminal Code, in relation to the jurisprudential theory of the existence of the crime of aggravated theft to the detriment of the State in the event of unlawful apprehension of wildlife by a person without a hunting license (Supreme Court of Cassation, IV Criminal Section, Sentence no. 34352 of 27/5/2004) "adds the lawyer. Carla Campanaro, head of the LAV Legal Department.

Massimo Vitturi, head of LAV Hunting and Wildlife at the Ministry of the Environment, asks for the strengthening of controls and protection of protected species, guaranteeing adequate resources for the Park: "we also ask that the transposition of Directive 2008/99 / EC of the European Parliament on criminal protection of the environment, which asked the Member States for effective sanctions for those who kill protected species, is reformulated by inserting a specific criminal case into the Criminal Code that provides for adequate sanctions, certainly including imprisonment and the permanent revocation of the firearms license as well as the prohibition from carrying out any activity that involves the use of animals, for those who commit such atrocities ".

THE INVESTIGATIONS. Meanwhile, the causes that led to Stefano's death are not yet clear. The animal, a male of about 10 years in excellent physical condition, was found in the municipality of Castel S. Vincenzo (IS), on the Molise side of the Park, on the slopes of Monte Marrone, on the recommendation of a hiker. The agents of the State Forestry Corps, the veterinary staff of the Park and the Asl of Isernia intervened on the spot, supported by the Park Guards.

The bear was devoid of ear tags but from the examination of morphological characteristics as well as from the subsequent reading of the microchip it was possible to trace it back to the specimen named "Stefano" which on several occasions had also been sighted outside the borders of the protected area of the Park. The bear was recovered and transported to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Teramo and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Teramo to ascertain the causes of death.

POISONING OR SHOOTING? From the radiographic examination of the carcass of the bears were two bullets highlighted, one of which in the cranial region and the other at the level of the scapulohumeral joint (the latter would seem rather dated and therefore not responsible for the cause of death) as well as several dots scattered throughout the body. The autopsy examination, carried out a few hours later, however, has not yet defined with certainty the cause of death of the animal.

E there are those who suspect poisoning, also because in the area, a few years ago, there were several poisoned bears, along with about fifteen wolves. Given the seriousness of the fact, more in-depth investigations are underway which could be relevant to reconstruct the dynamics of the facts. The Anti-poison Dog Nucleus of the State Forestry Corps has also been on the field since yesterday, which is patrolling the area precisely to avoid this second hypothesis. For the moment, the sweeping in the area has led to discovery of a fox, apparently devoid of signs of predation, and some scattered pieces of meat which will be subjected to necropsy and toxicological tests.
