A team of scientists recently discovered a new species of golden drop frog: very small, with a bright orange color, but so poisonous as to be even lethal. The discovery took place a few months ago in Brazil. It is in fact a very small amphibian, about 13 mm in size, belonging to the Brachycephalidae family, which lives in the Brazilian forests and mountain ranges. The newly identified frog was renamed with the name Brachycephalus rotenbergae, in honor of Elsie Laura Rotenberg, founder of the NGO Projecto Dacnis, which deals with the protection of the Atlantic Forest.

"The new species is genetically similar to Brachycephalus margaritatus and morphologically similar to Brachycephalus ephippium." - explain the researchers who have published the details of the new species in the journal Plos One. - And it differs from the latter for the presence of faded dark spots on the skull and on the post-cranial plates, as well as for the black connective tissue on the dorsal muscles, for the morphology of the parotic plate and the less pronounced mouth ".

The small frog found in Brazil has a cbright orange color and intense black eyes. And like other frogs belonging to the Brachycephalidae family, this species is also fluorescent.

"It is important to note that these colors can help the species camouflage in their microhabitat, as there are large amounts of tiny yellow and orange leaves, mushrooms and seeds on the ground, especially during the summer season," the experts add.

Although Brachycephalus rotenbergae is one of the smallest frogs in the world, its skin contains a very powerful poison that it uses to defend itself from predators and which can also be lethal to humans. In short, better not to be fooled by appearance!
