Abandoned on the street by its former owner, it is just one of the many strays of the city. She lost her paws shortly after leaving her when she was hit by a moving train two years ago. Yet Shi Bao is strong: she gave birth to her four puppies near the Kouguan station in Datong, Shanxi province in the north of the country.
Balancing only on its front legs, courage this mom rubs her puppies with love, she feeds them and often takes them for a walk in the area around the train station where she has lived since she was homeless.
There are over 130 million stray dogs living on the streets in China. Many of them are the tagable victims of growing urbanization, which has seen millions of people move to skyscrapers with little space for pets. Just like the wretched owner of this little dog did.
But life on the street is hard and almost always impossible. In addition to extermination campaigns sponsored by the government in many cities, widespread is also theabuse of strays and catch for the dog meat market. Thousands then die of hunger and disease. In light of the dire conditions of Chinese stray dogs, Shi Bao's story appears as a real miracle of life. The wish can only be that this unique mother and her puppies will soon find a safe home.
